History of Trikala
Trikala is built on the ancient town of Trikki, which was founded around the 3.000 BC and took its name from the nymph Trikki, daughter of Pinios river or, according to others, of the mythical hero Asopos. During prehistoric ages this town was an important cultural center since it is the birthplace of Asclepius, god of medicine. According to Homer’s Iliad, the army of Triki, took part in the Trojan War with 30 ships on the side of the Greeks. During the historical period, Trikki was the capital of ancient Estiaiotida and the whole region experienced significant growth and prosperity.
Like the whole country of Greece, the region of Trikala experienced a prolonged period of bloody attacks and fierce wars and was conquered by many invaders including the Persians, the Goths, the Huns, the Slavs, the Bulgarians, the Normans and the Franks. In the beginning of the 2.000 AD the town is mentioned for the first time with its current name as part of the Byzantine Empire. In 1393 it was conquered by the Ottomans and developed into an important home-made center with emphasis on the woolen weaving, something that is known even today, as well as the production of leather products.
On August 23, 1881, with the signing of the Treaty of Constantinople, Trikala was reunited with the rest of Greece, becoming one of the main producers of agricultural and livestock products. Today, Trikala town has a population of 61.000 inhabitants and is located in central Greece, western of Thessaly’s regional unit. It is a flat, modern and picturesque town, the center of which is crossed by Litheos, the tributary of the Pinios river.
